I have wanted to start a charity for many years but didn't know where to begin. I considered hobbies I persue, thinking that it would be awesome to turn something I enjoy as a past-time into something that could help others. I am a skilled crocheter and also have a LOT of scrap yarn that I can't just throw away (you knitters and crocheters know that we always keep leftovers, waiting for the right project to use it up on!) and thought that if I could just get others to make some granny squares with their scrap yarn and then sew them together, something truly amazing could be created.  Imagine how you would feel receiving a quilt, made by people from all over the world, especially if you are going through difficult times-perhaps feeling lost, alone, isolated. Included with each quilt will be a list of all places the squares for that quilt were made (i.e., Ft. Lauderdale, San Francisco, Okeefenokee, etc). What a great way to connect with people and let them know you care!

This year, the quilts will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. I hope to see this project grow to an international level, wrapping the world's needy in warmth and love!

THE SQUARE PROJECT

By December 24, 2016, I would like to have 10 completed quilts in 4 categories (total of 40 quilts):

Baby - Each quilt requires 36 squares (need 360 total) *Size D hook
Child - Each quilt requires 100 squares (need 1,000 total) *Size H hook
Teenager - Each quilt requires 144 squares (need 1,440 total) *Size H hook
Adult - Each quilt requires 180 squares (need 1,800 total) *Size H hook

Total: 4500 squares
Please Note: All Squares must be made in a smoke-free/pet-free environment due to special circumstances

To keep things simple, the pattern shown here will be the only one used this year. All squares are done using a %100 acrylic, #4 medium weight yarn. The baby quilt squares made with a Sz D hook will be 4 3/4" X 4 3/4"; the rest of the squares made with a Sz H will be 5 1/2" X 5 1/2". Just send me your completed squares and I will be responsible for sewing all squares together. I will post photos of quilts as they are completed and will also let you know where the quilts go. I know these quilts will bring a lot of joy! I hope you will consider giving just 30 minutes to crochet a square that will become part of a project that conveys so much love, beauty, and warmth-especially to someone who may be very sick.

For The Square Project pattern instructions, go to The Square Project Gallery page. Just click on each description to see it enlarge. In addition, you will find the instructions for reading graph crochet and an example of how the squares will look when put together. Expect regular updates!

Any square motifs donated become the property of The Square Project and will be distributed as completed quilts to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The Square Project finished quilts will be pictured as they are completed and may be purchased. If an item from The Square Project is purchased, all proceeds will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. FiftyFierce will be completely transparent in all transactions and will post a running account on any funds raised to-date. Your help will make this the most amazing crochet project for charity!
